Written by Pam Robinson - Sarum U3A Webmaster Name and location of U3A: Sarum U3A is located in the historical Cathedral city of Salisbury, in the county of Wiltshire, close to Old Sarum, the original site of the cathedral, which gives the group its name. Salisbury is well known for its historical buildings, its proximity to the prehistoric site of Stonehenge, the New Forest, the beautiful chalk down land and river valleys of the county as well as the famous Jurassic coast of Dorset. Membership: Sarum U3A has about 423 members at present. Activities: Our Monthly Meetings, held on the third Wednesday of each month, offer members an opportunity to meet old and new friends, have a coffee and listen to an interesting speaker on a wide range of topics. Recently we have had talks on Lawrence of Arabia, Faberge, The Legacy of Antoni Gaudi, and Victorian Exploration of the Nile, to name a few. We produce a monthly newsletter to keep members up to date with activities and events. We have 64 groups this year, but this is increasing with new ideas for groups being introduced all the time. Several of our groups are Joint Groups with other U3A's in Salisbury, which all members are invited to join - Archaeology, Sunday Lunches and the U3A Choir. Other groups include many old favourites and some new ones such as Girls on the Go!, Fine Weather Golf, and Cathedrals and their Architecture. Our Study Days are very well supported. We are holding two this year - Falconry and Felting.Visits are an important part of our group - this year we have visited Greenwich, Bucklers Hard and Exbury gardens, Arundel Castle, and St Fagan's National Museum of History, and to follow Hever Castle and Clarks Shopping Village with Wells. Comment: We are a friendly, welcoming group, but don't take our word for it - founder member Phyllis Babb has this to say about Sarum U3A ………"When Peter Tee and I helped to set up Sarum U3A we said we would keep it small and friendly. It is still small enough for members to know each other and behave like a being in a club. This is partly because so many members attend monthly meetings and do not become isolated within groups, but it is also because many of us are still here, loving the association it gives and the common interest in shared activities which give continuity and variety from year to year. Friendly? Many of my closest friends I met through the U3A and we do try to be particularly welcoming to new members, whatever their interests." We look forward to meeting you soon.
