The Global Alliance for the Rights of Older People was founded through the collaborative efforts of the following nine organisations – International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse; International Longevity Centre – Global Alliance; International Federation on Ageing; International Association of Homes and Services for the Ageing; International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics; HelpAge International; AGE Platform Europe; Age UK; AARP. Today, GAROP is a network of over 400 members worldwide, united in our work to strengthen and promote the rights of older persons.Our mission is to support and enhance civil society engagement with Member States and National Human Rights Institutions at national, regional and international levels around a convention on the rights of older persons. |

The day is a special one
for older people and senior citizens around the world. You may find
officials and politicians making speeches that focus on this growing
section of the population, at this time of the year. The media will
also take this as an opportunity to publish interviews. Many of which will be with
older persons who have had an impact on society. Schools, public institutions
and office buildings will also use the day for announcing activities
that promote older persons. There are currently around 700 million people over the age of 60. It is predicted that by 2050, this figure will have risen to 2 billion. |

 Recently,
my parents downsized their home to a smaller house. Last week I got to see
it for the first time.
During our stay, I was surprised at how often my mother commented that “they just love their smaller house.” I wasn’t so much surprised that she felt that way about living small (I am a minimalist after all), but I was surprised at the frequency. It was a comment that she repeated over and over again during our one-week stay. Toward the end of the week, I sat down with my mom and asked her to list all of the reasons why she is experiencing more happiness in her smaller house, and you can see what she said if you simply click here. |

| A belief in conspiracies
has been with us since ancient times; but the 'echo-chamber of the internet'
has allowed conspiracy-mongering to run riot, and in the USA many of the
new states administrators are openly members of organisations that spurn
evidence-based positions.
Despite many judicial rulings, 92,000,000 Americans still believe that the 2020 US presidential election was fiddled. Is this a new phenomenon? If not, what is the cause of it? It isn't confined to the USA. There were clashes in India after people came out in support of a Hindu man who brutally killed a Muslim labourer over 'love jihad', a widely held belief that muslims are courting Hindu women in order to convert them. Indian police in October of last year arrested ten Muslim men for the offense of marrying a Hindu woman. In another 2020 pre-vaccine survey, 20% of Canadian and 25% of Americans said they would not get vaccinated. Hesitancy was correlated with beliefs that vaccines were a swindle by large pharmaceutical companies to increase their profits. |

Celebrated
Annually on October 1st International Day of Older Persons was passed
by the United Nations General Assembly on December 14th 1990, who declared
October 1st to be the International Day of Older Persons.
SPEAKER of the National Assembly, Advocate Jacob Mudenda, has called
for the exemption of elderly people from paying for water and electricity,
saying the enjoyment of free social services for such people is in line
with the ethos of the liberation struggle. He was speaking at Chinotimba
Old People’s Home in Victoria Falls recently where he handed over an assortment
of goods worth about US$4 000 donated by the Parliament of Zimbabwe.
