A disturbing report from Sri J R Gupta, President of Indian Society of U3A and Senior Citizens Delhi:
Amidst the lockdown to contain Covid-19 outbreak, a disturbing trend has emerged: panic driven social ostracisation and vigilantism. Reports have already surfaced of how doctors and other medical staff who are at the fore front of fighting contagion are being forced out of their homes by their landlords fearing infection. We have also seen a similar story with airline staff who have ferried stranded Indians from abroad and are now bing viewed as 'carriers' of the virus. In fact, Air India put out a statement that vigilante resident welfare associations / Senior Citizens Associations were ostracising and calling for the police on its crew members who had gone abroad as part of their duty. And then there is downright racism with people from the Northeast being abused and harassed because of their features. Some have even reported being heckled and told to move to Wuhan, China. Earthquakes result from a “stick-slip” motion, where rocks “stick” along fault planes while stress accumulates until a “slip” occurs – a bit like pulling on a stuck door until it suddenly opens. This slip also releases energy as the seismic waves that create substantial damage.

Recently another class of stick-slip motion has been discovered. These “slow slip events” last for weeks to months, compared to seconds to minutes. Slow slip events occur faster than average plate motion, but too slow to generate measurable seismic waves. This means they need to be studied by GPS networks rather then seismometers.

Senior Citizens Council of Delhi organized Graceful Ageing Conference at Nishkam Sewa Trust, Haridwar on 29-02-2020 to 02-03-2020. Welcoming all the delegates & Guests, J.R. Gupta, President of Council, briefed about various free facilities being provided in the Recreation Centre, such as Physiotherapy, Blood sugar test, Computer Training, Yoga Classes, Library, News Papers, Television, Carom Board, Chess, Ludo, health checkup camps, consultations from eminent doctors & Spiritual Discourses. He informed about protecting lonely senior citizens from abuses/ humiliations at the hands of their own children and others. He further told that Delhi senior citizens are getting maximum benefits from Delhi Govt. in comparison to other states across the country. The Chief Guest was Maha Mandaleshwar Swami Anand Chaitanaya Saraswati ji Maharaj, Anand Krishan Dham, Kankhal, Haridwar, delivered a special lecture on Ageing. A cultural program was also organized by the 12 students (6 girls and 6 boys) of Patanjali Vidyapeeth, Haridwar.
